According to research, 6 in 10 employees have a mental health condition. With that in mind, if we were to ask you how mentally healthy your workforce is right now, would you really know?

Spotting signs of mental health issues early is key. Often, warning signs go unnoticed which can be detrimental not only to your business but more importantly your employee.

  • 65% of employees say there’s a stigma around mental health
  • 9 in 10 say their mental health condition affects them at work
  • 40% don’t feel comfortable telling their manager about their condition
  • 1 in 4 worry their employer will want to get rid of them

Mental health symptoms can be split into five categories: emotional, cognitive, behavioural, physical and business outcomes.

Emotional symptoms

Employees may become increasingly irritable or overly sensitive to criticism, resulting in them taking feedback personally when they’d previously taken it constructively.

They may also lose their self-confidence and sense of humour. If you have an employee who was previously outgoing and outspoken and they all of a sudden go into their shell, could there be underlying issues you need to carefully address?

Cognitive symptoms

While employees' wellbeing is the number one priority, cognitive symptoms can often impact your business’ output. Individuals who suffer from a mental health condition may have difficulties concentrating, which can result in mistakes being made.

Furthermore, they may become increasingly indecisive and struggle to make decisions on their own. Cognitive issues can also affect peoples' perception, ability to learn and memory. To keep abreast of what could be cognitive symptoms of a mental health condition, look out for any sudden and unexplained drops in employees' performance.

Behavioural symptoms

Often, employees with a mental health condition will become disengaged. They may withdraw themselves from group activities, regularly miss deadlines, and provide less in terms of productivity. If an employee does become withdrawn, it’s important not to force participation though, as this could result in them shutting down more.

Other behavioural signs include a notable increase in sick days, regularly turning up late, and acting out of character.

Physical symptoms

Physical signs can be the easiest to look out for, but they must be approached sensitively. For example, if you notice an employee has rapidly gained weight, it's not something you’d just blurt out, is it?

Other physical symptoms include visible tiredness or exhaustion; constant illness; rapid weight loss; thinning hair; and lack of care in appearance – this should be gauged by what is the 'norm' on an employee-by-employee basis.

Business outcomes

As we've touched on throughout, there are several business impacts of poor mental health in the workplace. These could be:

  • An increase in sick days
  • An increase in lateness
  • Low morale and engagement
  • A spike in employee turnover
  • A slump in productivity

9 in 10 of those that currently have a mental health condition said it affects them at work. The most common impacts are:

Jumping to conclusions

If you do think an employee might be struggling, be sure to approach the situation tactfully. Don't just ask if they have a mental health condition, approach the situation with care and compassion.

I don't have Microsoft Office or Microsoft Word, what should I do?

If you don't have Microsoft Office, or Microsoft Word installed on your PC or Mac, don't worry - you can still use our products. You can get a free alternative from Open Office.

Open Office Org is open-source developed alternative to Microsoft Office, developed by a large software company called Oracle. Open Source means the company who build the software, allow 100% use of it, 100% free.

Since Open Office is specifically developed to be exactly the same as Microsoft Office, with all the same programs in the suite (Eg: Word, Excel, Access and Power Point) - it will freely open any Microsoft Office file-format. Meaning, just because a document was written in Microsoft Word, doesn't mean it can't be opened in another program. Open Office will do that, and vise versa.

To download and install Open Office;

  1. Go to www.openoffice.org.
  2. On the left hand side, click 'I want to download Open Office'. In the green box, click the main link which starts with 'Start downloading OpenOffice.org...'
    • Windows Only:When the program has downloaded, click Install and wait for the program to install.
    • MAC OSX Only:When the program has downloaded, a notification box will pop up with an arrow from the Open Office Icon to the Applications Folder in Finder, drag the icon to the Applications folder to install the program.
  3. You are now ready to use Open Office, and the documents you have purchased from us.
